An easy bicycle path suitable for beginners who want to spend a few hours outdoors. An excellent 1-day route for families with children who want to spend time together, but also for people with disabilities who want to get out of the everyday monotony and spend their day „differently”.
Route route is Montana – Belimel – Jelezna – Ciprovtsi
We leave Montana heading west on county road 102, which offers good conditions for pedaling. We pass by the Ogosta reservoir lake, the second largest artificial lake in Bulgaria (after Iskar reservoir lake) and even the Balkan Peninsula, and among the largest in Europe. Its waterfalls shelter many species of fish appreciated by passionate, including perch, carass, carp or rak.
After passing Ogosta Lake, our route follows the river Ogosta – the largest tributary river of the Danube in northwest Bulgaria – to the village of Belimel. From here we continue the route on the county road 102, cross Jelezna and then get to Ciprovtsi.
Ciprovtsi is a picturesque mountain town famous for its rugs, locally known as kilims, which are woven manually at vertical wars.
Here you can watch a tissue demonstration, participate in a tissue class, or enjoy a trip to nearby Chiprovtsi waterfall.
The history museum in Chiprovita was established in 1988 and directly related to the national celebration of the 300th anniversary of the outbreak of the Chiprovitic uprising.
The exhibition area of the main building begins with archaeological finds dating from a long chronological period – from the Bronze Age to the late Middle Ages.
The five exhibition halls present events and processes that highlight Chiproviti in the context of the whole Bulgarian and world historical space.
The first hall of the museum is dedicated to mining – there are separate stages of mining and ore processing, with emphasis on new technologies brought into the region by Saxon miners.
In the second room are presented the works of the golden school in Chiproviţi (16th – 17th centuries) and their distribution is presented at the level of Europe.
The third hall presents the role and role played by Catholicism in the life of the village of Chiprovita in the seventeenth century – the educational activity, the diplomatic and missionary activity of the upper Catholic clergy, the outbreak and the evolution of the Chiprovitic Uprising and the subsequent migratory movements in today’s lands of Romania and Croatia.
In the fourth room we can watch the main periods in the development of Carpets in Chiprovtsi and folklore „torlac”. It is also called the Carpet Room and is one of the most popular tourists.
The last room is dedicated to exhibiting church paintings. In the Katerinina House there is an exhibition that presents Torlake’s life and customs and a „vivid collection of dyes” is planted in the yard.
The Balova Shuma Memorial Complex is located about one kilometer southeast of the village of Gavril Ghenovo (northwest Bulgaria, Montana district).
This is a monument from the time of socialism in Bulgaria, and today it is found in bad conditions – broken and broken plates, invaded by bushes, broken statues, etc.
The only thing that still impresses is the feeling of energy and the desire of architects, builders, authorities, etc. to raise something so grandiose and spectacular in its midst of desertion.
What remains of the memorial complex and can still be distinguished among the ruins is: an obelisk, sculptures (probably the guerrillas) and the chamber for eternal fire, three pedestals with heroic verses, etc.
The „Balova shuma” dam is located near the village of Gavril Ghenovo in the Montana region. The pond is private and allows fishing. Here is the right place for fishing enthusiasts where they can catch carp, white Chinese carp (or chicken) or sleep.It is also ideal for camping.
Montana’s „Wells” construction is a marble architectural well with several waterfalls, which in the warm summer months are lighted in attractive colors at night. This fountain can be admired in the central square „Zheravitsa. There is a grandiose monument at one of the ends of the big rectangular basin.
The fountain market is a place for walks, rest, meetings and, at the same time, to mark important national and local holidays and to organize celebrations. Around the fountain are resting places and a constant green area in the park. As the area around them is not flat, ramps are provided for disabled people. All adjacent areas are pedestrian areas.
In the vicinity of the Fountain and the Market there are a number of central administrative and cultural centers of the city – the municipal administration, the History Museum, the Dragomir Asenov Drama Theater, the Geo Milev Bookstore and others.
The cave is located between Upper and Dolna Lukes (2 km northwest of the Lunca de Sus village, on the right bank of the Prevalska Augusta River), in the Chiprovci region of Stara Planina, in the park of the same name.
It was formed in gray limestone formations of Lower Cretaceous (Aptian). It has been declared a landmark with a total area of 0.5 hectares.
The cave is renowned for its many white crystalline formations and underground pools, but has not been studied. It is preserved to avoid destruction and devaluation.
Formations are mainly stalagmites and slag ponds. There are thick clay deposits on the bottom of the cave and dripping water. The cave has beautiful pictures, being a large room with tall columns. It’s worth visiting anytime.
To the left is a small gallery with very thin stalactites, among which you have to go with great care. Because it is easily accessible, the cave is pretty scratched, but it has beautiful places. It is accessible to everyone. You just have to be careful not to fall into a hole made for hunting.
The visit can take between 20 minutes and 4 hours, depending on whether they want to reach the stalactites gallery or not. The cave leaves a beautiful impression, but it is not compared to the most beautiful caves.
The Lapidarium Archaeological Exhibition is a place where specialists have sorted stones according to archaeological importance – statues, stone plates with epigraphs, architectural details such as columns, friezes.
Opened in 2001, the Lapidarium Exhibition is an integral part of the Montana Museum of History.
The archeological exhibition takes place in the beautiful park of the Priest Garden near St. Cyril and Methodius Church, just a few minutes away from the Mihailov House.
The Lapidarium exhibition comprises fifty-six archaeological monuments discovered in the region. There can be seen almost invisible inscriptions and monuments that are the only source that gives us information about, and testify to the history and culture of people who once lived in these lands. The inscriptions provide information about the region’s culture and history from the period after the second century, our age.
There are many artifacts testifying to the faith and worship of the ancient gods of the people of those times – the goddess Diana (the protector and patron of Montana), Apollo, Hygeia and others.
Some of the exhibits attest to various Roman emperors, rulers and other leaders who waged wars at one time in the province of Moesia de Jos and in the region. Military armor and objects have also been discovered in the region.
Monuments have been declared as objects of historical and cultural value, and scientists and archaeologists carry out various scientific expeditions for their research in order to clarify their origin and information.
