A quiet, crowded route along the canyon of the Rusensky – Lom River, with beautiful landscapes and many attractions to visit.
The route starts at the villages of Basarbovo – Krivina. On our way, we can visit the monastery of St. Dimitrie Basarbovo. From here we continue our journey through the canyon along the Rusensky River – Lom.
The roads are pretty good, paved, but there are also portions of gravel road or road.
The route takes us through the villages of Malkoya Sandzhak and Krasen. From there, the bicycle route can take two different routes, but returning to the same place, the Bojicen village.
From the village we can descend to the south to the confluence of the Rusensky River – Lom with the Cherni – Lom River and from here we climb the Rusensky river – the Lom towards the churches dug in the rock of Ivanovo and follow the course of the river back to Bojicen.
A second route can descend to Bojicen on the bank of the river to the confluence of the Rusensky River – Lom with Chervin – Lom and then climb to the village of Bojicen. And from here we go back to Basarbovo on the same route.
Basarbovo Monastery is located south of the Danube River and about 10-11 km from the city of Ruse. The name comes from its proximity to the town of Basarbovo and dedicated to St. Demetrius of Basatbovo, the inhabitant of the monastery in the 17th century.
Although the early history of the monastery has not been fully elucidated, it is believed to have been built between the 12th and 14th centuries during the Second Bulgarian Empire.
The monastery overlooks the Rusenski Lom River and the canyon dug by its waters over the centuries. Although this is the only rock-built monastery that operates in this area, there are about 40 churches along this canyon.
The real destination is made up of a beautiful garden where a road leads to a well, which is said to have been dug by the monk Dimitrie himself. It is said that its waters would have curative powers.
In 1956 a chapel was built, built in 1937, and two rooms and a cave. The cave in which St. Demetrius slept is far above these additions, reaching 48 steps; next to the cave there is a church dug in rock with a great icon of the saint. Another adjacent cave was recently transformed into a small museum. On the monastery grounds there is a small cemetery where several monks were buried.
Churches dug in Ivanovo – a landmark protected by UNESCO – are located on the territory of the Rusenski Lom Natural Park.
A special route familiarizes tourists with the history of the stone-carved churches of Ivanovo and the natural park. The starting point of the 9 km route is the village of Ivanovo. Starts at the train station in the village and continues through the village of Ivanovo either along the gorge near Garvalov Yalak, or on the Rousse Road to the Stone Quarries from Ivanovo to the Rusenski Lom River. There is a parking lot at the churches where tourists will always find a guide designated by the Regional History Museum in Ruse.
A complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells have developed in the vicinity of the village of Ivanovo. Here, the first hermits dug the cellars and churches during the 12th century. The wall paintings of the 14th century bear witness to the exceptional talent of the artists belonging to the Painting School in Tarnovo.
The five historical monuments in this group (chapels, churches, etc.), dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, serve as examples that open the way for the development of distinctive character and the craftsmanship of art during the second state bulgar – 1187-1396. Wealth, variety of cells, chapels, churches, monastery complexes, original architectural solutions – all in a magnificent natural environment – confirm the value of this extraordinary historical group.
