Route Giurgiu – Gostinu and return – DanubeOn2Wheels

It is a short 1-day course for beginners, families who want to spend a day with their children and at the same time sport, and for people with disabilities who want a two-wheeler adventure.

Starting from Giurgiu in the morning, we reach DN5 to the intersection with the DJ507 that leads us north, passing through Oinacu and Branistea villages, and from Branistea we go along the Danube following DJ 507 to Gostinu. Here we can rest, we can sit in the sun on Gostinu beach if weather permitting us, or we can serve a cold drink on a terrace before we start the return route to Giurgiu.

The return route is the same.

60 years ago, on June 20, 1954, the metal bridge across the Danube connecting the cities of Giurgiu and Ruse, named after the Soviet insistence „Bridge of Friendship”, was at the moment the largest mixed bridge – road and rail – in Europe.

In the years 1950-1952, a building for club and cinema activities was built for workers involved in building the bridge. It continued to function as a cultural center, its scene being the host of the Giurgiu community for shows and celebrations.

On July 24, 2002, to celebrate the 138 years of institutional existence of the Border Police, the building became the headquarters of the Border Police Museum in Romania, the only institution of its kind in Romania.

Divided into six exhibition halls, plus the showroom, the institution hosts the permanent collection of the museum, made up of battle flags, the exhibition of historical frontier uniforms „De Veghe la Fruntarii”, the exhibition of current European uniforms, the river boats’ models Border Police, current weapons, and also during two world wars, epaulets, badges, decorations, historical publications, and a large painting representing the Battle of Calugareni.

The construction of the park was requested by General Kiselef in 1830.

The Alei Park was set up for many years, starting in 1831, when the town began to be systematized.

In 1840, 200 linden trees were planted, and a buffet and a music pavilion was also built. Today, the tradition of music in the park is still preserved.

Here is one of the first romantic gardens in Romania. As time passed, only part of the initial structure of alleys and vegetation was maintained.

The statues of Alei Park are also works of art and historical monuments. Most importantly, from the point of view of art, it is the bust of Mihai Eminescu. Another important monument is dedicated to the French army, as a tribute to the commander of the allied troops of the Balkan Peninsula during the First World War, Marshal Foch. The monument was installed in 1920 when the name of Marshal Foch was also assigned to the park.

The statue of Apollo Belvedere is one of the historical monuments recognized in Giurgiu County. It was built in the 19th century.

The Apollo of Belvedere is a famous ancient marble sculpture. It was rediscovered in the nineteenth century in Terracina. At present, the statue is located in the Belvedere courtyard of the Vatican and is part of the antiquities collection of the Vatican Museums.

The statue of marble from Giurgiu is a Roman copy of a bronze statue, created between 350 and 325 BC. by the Greek sculptor Leocares. The right arm and left hand were missing at the time of the discovery, being rebuilt by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, a sculptor and collaborator of Michelangelo.

The ensemble includes a series of monuments dedicated to all the heroes who lost their lives in the battles that took place in the territory of our country.

Initially, two monuments were built at the initiative of the inhabitants in 1905, in memory of the heroes who fell into the Independence War of 1877-1878.

Subsequently, the monuments of the heroes who fell in the two world wars were added. In 2013, they were rebuilt and re-upgraded.

Inside the ensemble was built a cross in memory of the hero Captain Daia Marin, who was born in 1919 in the village of Malu, Giurgiu County, and died in Blăjel commune, during the battles that the Romanian army wore in 1944, in the area Sibiu.
