Mezdra Route – DanubeOn2Wheels

Route route is Mezdra – Brusen – Lik – Oslen Krivodol – Sino Bardo – Strupets – Brusen – Mezdra

A light and easy way for beginners. The route leaves from Mezdra in the Princhovets area and we follow the Iskar River – the longest flowing on the Bulgarian territory, 368 km long – to the village of Brusen, from where we descend to the south towards the village of Lik and from here we take the road to north until we reach Oslen Krivodol and then Sino Bardo. From here we climb north to the village of Strupts.

At the Strupetski Monastery „St. Prophet Ilie „, our bicycle route goes westwards and follows the right bank of the Iskar River, passing through the village of Brusen, to reach Mezdra again, the finishing point of the route.

Restaurants and hotels identified on the bicycle routes in the Vratsa district.

The Strupetski Monastery or „St. John’s Prophet” is located in the north of the Bold Head, on the west side of the Iskar River.

The monastery is located in a picturesque area near the Iskar River, about 4, 5 km from the village of Strupets.

From the limited information at hand and coming from the distant history of Turzishki / Strupeshi, the monastery has existed since the beginning of the 16th century. In the immediate vicinity of the monastery there is the market / bazaar, from which the monastery borrowed its name – Tarkishki. At the end of the 17th century, the monastery was flooded by the Turks.

The complex of the monastery consists of a residential building with three floors – built in Renaissance architectural style – and two churches – an old one and a new one.

The Kaleto fortress and the Kaleto archaeological complex in the Bulgarian town of Mezdra in northern Bulgaria is a 7,000-year-old fortified settlement with traces of civilized human life from all the Chalcolithic to the Middle Ages (Kale a Turkish word that means a „fortress” left over from the Ottoman period, frequently used for the many ruins of the ancient and medieval fortresses throughout Bulgaria, whose names are sometimes unknown.)

The Kaleto Fortress is located in the south-western corner of today’s Mezdra, on a rocky hill, on the left bank of the Iskar River. The earliest traces of civilized human life discovered here date back to the Chalcolith (Eneolithic, Copper Age) until the end of the 5th and the middle of the 4th millennium BC.

Remains of two fortified settlements from this period were discovered on the hillside, both being destroyed by forest fires.
