Rusensky-Lom Nature Park Route – DanubeOn2Wheels

Route route is Ruse – Basarbovo – Krivina – Bojicen – Ivanovo – Cerven – Nisovo – Stratklevo – Ruse

It departs from Ruse at the Eco Bulgaria petrol station and we walk along the E85 Ruse – Sofia road up to the western industrial zone where we turn right and we head south on the 501 road to Ivanovo. From here the signs to Rusensky Park – Lom begin.

We cross Grobishten Park, pass through Basarbovo village on the bank of the Rusesnsky River – Lom and then cross the village of Krivina. Here we are at the northern point of Rusensky Park – Lom. After passing Ivanovo, we pedal 501 down the road to the road leading to Cerven, and from there we head towards the southern side of the park. From Cerven we enter 202 and take it north and climb to the village of Nisovo. We cross the Beli River – Lom, then pass through the village of Stratlevo and keep on the road 202, which intersects the national road 2 until we get back to Ruse.

On our bicycle route through the Rusensky – Lom Park we will see signs to the Ivanovo rocked churches and to the medieval city and the Cherven Fortress.

Rusensky – Lom Park is very well organized and here tourists find various hiking and cycling routes that allow them to enjoy the mining landscapes and explore the caves and wooded areas.

The Reserve is located 20 km south of Ruse and is named after the Rusenski Lom River – the last affluent on the right side of the Danube River.

The Rusenski Lom Nature Reserve occupies a territory of 3,408 hectares and is a protected area since 1970.

The beautiful terraces of the rivers, the high vertical rocks, the caves, the rock formations, the great biological diversity and the historical monuments turn the park into a place of magnificent interest.

Apart from the fact that Rusenski Lom Nature Park is suitable for scientific research, it also offers various opportunities for active tourism and ecotourism.

The combination of rocks, forests, rivers and meadow caves is the reason for the great biological diversity of the park.

The Rusenski Lom park includes 902 species. The fauna consists of 10 amphibians (of which 5 are protected), 19 reptiles, 22 fish species, crayfish, snails and river mussels and 66 mammals. Birds are among the most important inhabitants of the park: 190 species, of which 110 are nesting here. The conditions in the park are particularly favorable for birds nesting on rocks such as Aquila chrysaetos, Egyptian eagle (Neophron percnopterus), Buteo rufinus, Teddyna ferruginea, Falcon cherrug), etc.

Churches dug in Ivanovo – a landmark protected by UNESCO – are located on the territory of the Rusenski Lom Natural Park.

A special route familiarizes tourists with the history of the stone-carved churches of Ivanovo and the natural park. The starting point of the 9 km route is the village of Ivanovo. Starts at the train station in the village and continues through the village of Ivanovo either along the gorge near Garvalov Yalak, or on the Rousse Road to the Stone Quarries from Ivanovo to the Rusenski Lom River. There is a parking lot at the churches where tourists will always find a guide designated by the Regional History Museum in Ruse.

A complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells have developed in the vicinity of the village of Ivanovo. Here, the first hermits dug the cellars and churches during the 12th century. The wall paintings of the 14th century bear witness to the exceptional talent of the artists belonging to the Painting School in Tarnovo.

The five historical monuments in this group (chapels, churches, etc.), dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, serve as examples that open the way for the development of distinctive character and the craftsmanship of art during the second state bulgar – 1187-1396. Wealth, variety of cells, chapels, churches, monastery complexes, original architectural solutions – all in a magnificent natural environment – confirm the value of this extraordinary historical group.

The starting point for the Cherven fortress is the village of Cherven. Tourists have to cross the parking lot from the Cherven fortress and climb the stairs leading to the entrance to the fortress.

The foundations of 13 churches, a boyars palace and one of the two original medieval battle towers in Bulgaria are all preserved there. There is a staircase that descends to the river on the west side of the fortress. Tourists can also see a genuine water supply device that was used in the fortress.

A guide designated by the Russian Museum is available in the fortress.

The archeological findings made at Cherven (coins treasures, jewelery, epigraphic monuments, ceramics, artifacts of everyday life, crafts, weapons, etc.) are preserved in the National History Museum in Sofia and in the Regional History Museum in Ruse .

This site was declared a National Architectural Reserve in 1965 and today is a very popular tourist attraction.

Basarbovo Monastery is located south of the Danube River and about 10-11 km from the city of Ruse. The name comes from its proximity to the town of Basarbovo and dedicated to St. Demetrius of Basatbovo, the inhabitant of the monastery in the 17th century.

Although the early history of the monastery has not been fully elucidated, it is believed to have been built between the 12th and 14th centuries during the Second Bulgarian Empire.

The monastery overlooks the Rusenski Lom River and the canyon dug by its waters over the centuries. Although this is the only rock-built monastery that operates in this area, there are about 40 churches along this canyon.

The real destination is made up of a beautiful garden where a road leads to a well, which is said to have been dug by the monk Dimitrie himself. It is said that its waters would have curative powers.

In 1956 a chapel was built, built in 1937, and two rooms and a cave. The cave in which St. Demetrius slept is far above these additions, reaching 48 steps; next to the cave there is a church dug in rock with a great icon of the saint. Another adjacent cave was recently transformed into a small museum. On the monastery grounds there is a small cemetery where several monks were buried.

Kyunt Capua is the only preserved gate of the fortress fortress of the Ottoman city of Rustschuk in Ruse. Under the terms of the Berlin Peace Treaty pact of 1878, all the fortresses on the territory of the Principality of Bulgaria were destroyed.

From the Ruschushkata fortress, only this gate and its iron-covered door were preserved. The stones in the wall of the fortress were used to build the bell tower of the Holy Trinity Church in the city.

The name of the gate literally translates as a pipe door, because a pipe (kyunt) passing along it, which was part of the city’s water system. This water supply fueled the main fountain, which was in the courtyard of Saint Grigorievski School (now Angel Kanchev School). This fountain is the only preserved fountain from the 17th century to the present and is located in the city of Ruse.

Levent Tabia Citadel is situated at the highest point of Ruse – Sara Bair Hill.

The fortress was built in 20th century by the Ottoman Empire as part of its defense system. The project of the fortress is the work of the Prussian military engineer – the officer Helmuth von Moltke, who also designed the Medjidi Tabia Fortress near Silistra.

Levent Tabia was a healthy and safe installation and remained intact until Bulgaria was liberated when it was served by the needs of the newly formed Danube military fleet. The capacity of the force was 3,000 soldiers and artillery. During World War II an anti-aircraft battery was hosted here.

In 1972, Levent Tabia was transformed into a refined restaurant complex that offers gourmet dishes from various Danubian lands.

Since 2005, the Leventa Complex has been modernized and is part of the „Russian Wine House”.

Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) is the oldest church in the city of Ruse. It was built in 1962 and is a pseudo-basilica dug in the earth, with the size of 15,60 x 31,20 m.

The bell tower has a height of 19 meters and has 5 bells. It has a hexagonal shape and was built of carved stones taken from the ruined wall of Ruschushkata. Next to the walls of the bell tower are the commemorative monuments of two English officers who died during the Crimean War, when England fought against Turkey against Russia.

In the porch of the Temple are the graves of four bishops from Dorostolo-Cheervien – Grigore, Vasile, Mihail and Sofronie. The area around the Holy Trinity Church was used as a Christian cemetery in the past, and there are still a few buried stones.

The restaurant is located in the city of Ruse and was built on a floating pontoon on the Danube. Clients can fish fresh fish from the Danube, in an authentic Danube atmosphere.

Among the dishes found in the menu are fresh fish and Mediterranean seafood, Black Sea shells and traditional cuisine. The unit has 70 seats in the main hall and 40 outside on the terrace.
