It’s a Jiu route. We leave as early as morning E79 towards Podari village crossing Jiul, and then we leave E79 and enter DJ561 and we head south towards Segarcea town, passing through the villages of Livezi and Gura Văii. On our route we pass by the Crown Domain Segarcea, which we can visit. We leave Segarcea and enter the DJ561B towards Drănic village and continue to pedal until we reach Padea, the village that is the point from which we will start on the way back to Podari.
The return route extends along Jiu to Foişor village, on a gravel road that continues along the Jiu’s bank and goes up through the villages of Bâzdâna. And the commune of Ţuglui. From here we enter the asphalt again on DJ561 towards Gura Văii, then Livezi. We’re leaving E79 and we’re going to Podari.
The Segarcea Crown Domain is part of a century-old story of an anxiety destiny.
Segarcea – the „land of dreams”, as predicted by its Latin roots – is one of the twelve domains that the Royal House of Romania took over in administration during Charles I, the king of Romania, in 1884, by Parliament’s decision. This was how the Administration of Royal Domains (ADC) was established.
The role of the royal domains was to financially support the Royal House, but also to become agricultural knots in the vanguard of technology and knowhow.
Among these areas, Segarcea was given the role of pordorium and wine cellar under the supervision of distinguished agronomists and winemakers, coordinated by Florian Davidescu and Dobre Rădulescu.
Since then, the Segarcea Crown Domains have accompanied kings and state people to diplomatic receptions and witnessed the writing of history as a faithful servant.
Today, 60% of the 300 ha of the plantation is for black varieties and 40% for white varieties. The Segarcea vineyards benefit from an extremely favorable location for the creation of strong wines, being situated at the 44º parallel in Oltenia, 25 km south of Craiova and 70 km north of the Danube.
