Route route is Veliko Tarnovo – Debelet – Plakovo – Golemanite – Kilifarevski Monastery and return

The beginner route of 45 km departs from the West Industrial Area of Veliko Tarnovo and takes it south, crossing the Yantra River. We pedal along the Belitza River and descend to the town of Debelet and from there we follow the county road 551, descending further south and passing by Plakovo Aquatic Center in the village of the same name.

From here we leave the county road and head west towards Goleanti village, then pedal to the village of Natovti, and from there we take down south to reach the Kilifarevski Monastery, the finishing point of the route.

The road to the Monastery is paved and kept in good condition, even if it leaves the main road.

Here we will recapture and rest for a while. There are also some places in the area where we can eat and serve some drinks before we start the journey back to Veliko Tarnovo.

Its 19th-century comfortable architecture with wooden porches is misleading. In its medieval past, the Kilifarevski monastery was a great institution.

It was founded in 1348 by Theodosius of Tarnovo, one of the brightest minds of Bulgaria, who promoted Hesychasm, and mystical teaching aimed at salvation through meditation. In this context, the Kilifarevski monastery became a major religious center with a busy scriptorium and a school that prides itself on students like Evtimie, who was to become the last patriarch of Bulgaria before the fall of the Ottomans and the future Metropolitan of Kiev. All three became later holy.

When the Ottomans came, the monastery was considered so important that the king himself donated money for his fortifications without any help. The monastery returned to life in the 15th century and was once again destroyed when it housed the Bulgarian rebels in 1596.

The church of St. Dimitrios of Thessaloniki (Sveti Dimitar Solunski) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. It is situated at the foot of the northeast of the Trapezitsa and Tsarevets hills, on the right bank of the Yantra River, outside the city’s medieval fortifications (at the borders of the Asenov quarter of the town of Veliko Tarnovo today). In the past, the church was part of a large monastery.

The church was destroyed several times (in the 13th century in the nineteenth century), but it was restored again. The last reconstruction is from 1977-1985 and the foundation is the architectural remains available and the example of the Bulgarian churches of the same period that have been better preserved.

The Prison Museum in Veliko Tarnovo is located in Saedinenie Square, near the Bulgarian Renaissance Museum and the Constituent Assembly and the Museum of Contemporary History.

The museum building dates from the 19th century and was used as a prison until 1954.

The construction is made of stone and has a ground floor, two upper floors, two inner courtyards surrounded by tall walls and a few service buildings.

The museum’s exhibition is on the ground floor and on the 1st floor and reproduces the true atmosphere of the prison cell with restored cells, where many famous revolutionaries have been imprisoned and tortured.

Instruments of torture are also displayed.

The archaeological museum in Veliko Tarnovo hosts the exhibition „Veliko Tarnovo – the capital of Bulgaria between the 12th and 14th centuries”, where the history and culture of the Ternovo region are exhibited, but the emphasis was placed during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom .

The exhibition was created on 16 November 1985 and related to the 800th anniversary of Assen and Peter’s revolt.

The address of the Archeological Museum Veliko Tarnovo is Str. Ivanka Boteva no. 2, Veliko Tarnovo.

The show „Tsarevgrad Turnov – Sound and Light” is a fascinating audiovisual show on a summer evening in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. Viewed from the entrance to the city, the buildings and walls of the Tsarevets castle are bathed in vibrant colors, and the color changes are accompanied by music. Three lasers, multicolored lights, dramatic music and church bells are used to tell the story of the fall of Tarnovo under Ottoman domination, as well as other key moments in Bulgarian history.

The whole show takes about 20 minutes. It has been organized in Tsarevets since 1985, when it celebrated the 800th anniversary of Asen’s and Peter’s uprising. It was designed and planned by a mixed Bulgarian-Czechoslovak team led by Valo Radev and Jaromir Hnik.

The Baldwin Tower is located in the Tsarevets Architecture Museum in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. The name of the Baldwin Tower is associated with the legend, according to which there was the death and death of the Latin king Baldwin (Baudouin) of Flanders, captured by Tsar Kaloyan after the Battle of Adrianople in 1205.

The Baldwin Tower rises in the south-eastern part of the Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, close to the Frenkhisarska Gate. The complex has a connection with the only water source outside the city walls. Near the entrance, the medieval tower guarded the water tanks. Next to the tower is the southern ladder that descends into a filter pit. The ladder had a width of 1.75 m and was closed between two parallel walls.

The modern tower that was visited today was rebuilt in 1933 after the design of the architect Alexander Rashenov, preserving the resemblance to the preserved tower near the town of Ruse in the Cherven Fortress.
